I bought my first ever bike in late March 2007, brand new not even 1 mile on it. It has been not quite 4 months since I actually started riding my little 250. 3200 miles later and now I am wishing that I would have bought a bigger bike. I rode by the dealer the other day and there was this beautiful Kawasaki Green Ninja staring at me thru the window. It was almost as if it had puppy dog eyes. It was a bigger one, not exactly sure what size, guessing about a 650. I am jonzin (?) now for a bigger bike. I would like to get a Harley but at the same time I really like the sportbike style and the way mine feels. I like the control that I have over the bike. I think I just have a control issue. I am learning a little bit more and more about myself as I am riding down the road. LOL!
Anyway, tell me how long you had your bike before you wanted something bigger.

I agree....it may have been years ago, but my 400 and 550 each only were my heart's desire for about a year.
I am so glad I jumped all the way in and got the Superglide (about 1600cc and almost 700lbs) It's just so awesome, unbelievably easy to handle for such a large bike. We got it the weekend after I took the Rider's Edge class and my first ride was the 20 miles home from the dealership. Even though it had been 26 years (other than the class), by the time I got home, I felt good enough about it to give my husband a ride (behind me of course!)
Now, to temper this...I am naturally a like power kind of lady so I was only mildly intimidated by the size. We made about 3 visits to the dealership before we brought it home, and actually the first visit I was not even feeling good about sitting astride it and bringing it off the stand....think maybe I catch on quickly?

i understand completey!!! i never rode behind or otherwise before getting my first bike Feb. of 2006...YES 2006.....at 5 feet tall and 145 lbs (very short inseam) I had some issues to overcome and once I trusted physics with each bike and learned each bikes handling requirements, I have gained enough confidence to get the dream bike. For me it is all about baby steps so I don't get overwhelmed and ignite panic attacks...we all have our demons....and for those like Bluesmomma2 who have what it takes to handle the bigger bike right off the bat I say WOO HOO HOOZIE....you are awesome!!!! I am the other half of the "Ninja Mafia" and got my lil 250 in December, taught myself to ride towards the end of Feb. and began looking for a bigger bike sometime in June!
Lil Ninja, we may have to come up with a different name for ourselves since I might not end up with another ninja.
I am having to be very careful in my selection since I stand tall at 5'4ish. From what I have been told, the bikes I am looking at can only be lowered a max of 4 inches and even that is not advised. I am looking at something along the lines of a 650 or 700. I thought about a Hayabusa (becuase they naturally sit low to the ground), but after talking to several people who have owned one or know more about bikes, I have decided to step it down a bit. I probably do not need to jump straight to the fastest production bike made....at least not yet! _________________ "Life isn't a journey 2 the grave w/ the intention of arriving safely n a pretty n well preserved body.....but rather 2 skid n broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, n loudly proclaiming -- WOW -- What a Ride!"

I bought my first bike, a 650 Vstar in March 2007. I've put about 3,000 miles on it and I'm ready for my dream bike. But first it looks like I'll inherit my husband's 99 Heritage Softail. That's all fine and dandy, but it will never be "my" bike, it will always be "his old bike". Know what I mean?
I do enjoy ridinging the Vstar. I'm 5'4, and this bike is the perfect size for me, with room to spare. (it's for sale ladies!) But the 1100 custom sits EXACTLY the same way and is only slightly heavier, and I am so ready for more power! I'm ready for "MY" bike.

I bought my 2007 883 Sportster Low in May and I have already bought another Gold wing trike. It wasn't the size of my sportster but I misssed the radio, intercom system and everything the trike has to offer. My new Sportster is for sale if anyone is intersted,it has fuel injection, alarm, wind shield, helmet lock, longer pull back handle bars, clock, and about 433 miles. If I don't sell it, I will ride it occasionally just so I can remember how to ride one.

OK, you brought up a VERY valid thing I sort of did not address when I want on my VRrrroooommm thing
I am not what I would consider tall, but at 5'7" I guess I am one of the taller ones in this conversation. Please accept any apologies I might need to offer if I made it sound like jumping on the bike I have is for everyone. We went into the dealership looking at the Dyna Lows but since the intent all along was for me to let my husband learn on whatever I got, we had to look at something that could be adapted/modified for both of us. Since the Dyna Low would not accomodate his 6'3" height I had to look at other models (we weren't looking at the V Rods or Sportsters some of which are also low). The lowest seat height bikes (softtail deuce and deluxe) we did not care for as I did not want personally the fat boy look for myself. (I lost 60 pounds this last year (FOR GOOD!) and I want something sleek, lol!) Of course the softtail bikes come set up with the forward controls I think, and at least with the Dyna family they have mid controls standard for those that need that. The modifications we did besides cosmetics were the forward controls which are a must for Roy and something I really like and wanted to learn to use...and then we got the "Reach Seat" that harley sells which totally solves any issues I have with the stock seat (it moves me lower by an inch and forward about 1 1/2 inches.)
OK, there's my input for now....why do I always want to grab my helmet and saddle up after posting here

Actual time varies but almost everyone will out grow their first bike unless they were comfortable on a larger bike. I'd say it took me a couple of months. _________________ Chrome Cowgirl

LilNinja; i think everyone grows out of the first bike fairly quickly. one advantage of your ninja 250 is that its the only "sport bike" 250 out there that the 14 yo riders can buy. have yo checked the inventory at the other 2 import dealers in stw? both of them are (in my opinion) much better dealers and usually have some used sportbikes around. if you're really ready for the jump to a bigger bike there is a used buell xb12 at one of them.
and Mocha...a 'busa i want to see that _________________ Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

and if a motorcycle isnt a "joyful noise", what is?
